Renewal of a permanent residence permit
You can renew your permanent residence permit if your personal data has changed, your permanent residence permit has become unusable, you have lost it, it is about to expire or you have noticed that the permanent residence permit contains inaccurate entries.
How can I renew my permanent residence permit?
The permanent residence permit may be renewed at your request if:
- your personal data has changed;
- the permanent residence permit has become unusable;
- the permanent residence permit is about to expire;
- the permanent residence permit contains inaccurate entries;
- the permanent residence permit has been lost;
- the permanent residence permit was revoked and declared null, but following an appeal against the revocation of the permanent residence permit, the court granted interim relief to suspend the execution of the contested decision.
First of all, you have to fill in the application for the renewal of the permanent residence permit electronically through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS) and reserve the time of the visit. To renew your permanent residence permit, you must apply in person within 4 months of completing the application via MIGRIS and provide biometric data (facial image and two fingerprints) and the following documents (the Word icon is displayed and the relevant list of control documents opens):
- application number;
- a valid travel document;
- documents confirming the change of personal data, if your personal data indicated your application for renewal of permit completed via MIGRIS and/or your personal data indicated in your travel document do not match your personal data specified in the Population Register of the Republic of Lithuania.
You must pay a state fee (unless you are exempt from the fee) for issuing of a renewed permanent residence permit:
- in accordance with the general procedure – EUR 45;
- urgently – EUR 90.
You must apply to the territorial division of the Migration Department to renew the document, regardless of the place of residence you intend to declare.
To receive the issued document, you must apply to the territorial division of the Migration Department, where you had submitted the application for a permanent residence permit.
The decision on the renewal of the permanent residence permit must be taken and the permanent residence permit must be renewed:
- in accordance with the general procedure – within 1 month;
- urgently – within 15 days.
Important:
- the alien does not lose the right of permanent residence in the Republic of Lithuania only because the period of validity of his/her permanent residence permit has expired;
- the documents of the child (adoptee) under 16 years of age regarding the renewal of the permanent residence permit shall be submitted by one of his/her parents (adoptive parents), presenting his/her identity document, or by a guardian (caregiver) or other legal representative, upon submission of a document certifying guardianship (caregiving) or a document certifying other legal representation and his/her personal identification document. The child (adoptee) from 6 to 16 years of age must be present in person when his/her documents are submitted. If an alien under the age of 6 is not present in person when his/her documents for the application for a permanent residence permit are submitted – two identical (from the same negative) photos corresponding to the alien’s age shall be submitted;
- alien minors over the age of 16 shall complete the application for the renewal of the permit, submit this application and documents regarding the issuance of the permanent residence permit and sign the application themselves;
- the application of the incapacitated alien for a permit is completed, this application and the documents regarding the renewal of the permanent residence permit are submitted by his guardian or other legal representative, presenting the document confirming his/her appointment as a guardian or other legal representative and his/her personal identification document. An incapacitated alien must be present in person when submitting the application and documents;
- the application for the renewal of the permanent residence permit of an alien present in the Republic of Lithuania, who is unable to come to the territorial division of the Migration Department due to a physical disability, may filled in, this application and documents for the issue of the permanent residence permit may be submitted by a person presenting a notarized or equivalent power of attorney and his/her personal identification document;
- the identity and signature of an alien present in the Republic of Lithuania, who is unable to come to the territorial division of the Migration Department due to incapacity or physical disability shall be confirmed and his/her biometric data shall be scanned by an employee of the territorial division of the Migration Department, who shall come to the alien’s location;
Can I leave Lithuania with a permanent residence permit?
Yes, you can leave and return to Lithuania during the permit period. However, you will lose the right of permanent residence in Lithuania and your permanent residence permit may be revoked if you reside in a non-European Union country for more than 12 months or you leave Lithuania to live in another European Union member state for more than 6 years or you will acquire the status of a long-term resident in another European Union member state.
If you leave the Republic of Lithuania for more than 6 months period, in accordance with the procedure established by the Law on Declaration of Residence, you must declare your departure. If you declare leaving the Republic of Lithuania, your permanent residence permit will become invalid and you will lose the right to permanent residence in Lithuania.
