I want to formalize a new temporary residence permit
When is a new temporary residence permit issued?
A new temporary residence permit shall be issued at the request of the foreigner if:
- personal data of the foreigner changes;
- the temporary residence permit has become unusable (e.g. the temporary residence permit is scratched, the temporary residence permit is not collected within 6 months);
- the validity of the travel document (passport) presented by the foreigner did not exceed the period of validity of the temporary residence permit issued to him/her or to be replaced, or exceeded it by less than 3 months, and, as a result, he/she has been issued with a temporary residence permit for a period shorter than the validity of his/her travel document by 3 months. Once the foreigner has presented a new valid travel document, a new temporary residence permit is issued for the remaining period of validity of the temporary residence permit specified in the decision;
- the temporary residence permit contains inaccurate entries;
- the temporary residence permit has been lost;
- the temporary residence permit has been cancelled and declared null and void, but, following an appeal against the decision to cancel the temporary residence permit, the court applied interim measures to suspend the execution of the appealed decision.
How do I apply for a new temporary residence permit?
First, you have to fill in an application for a new temporary residence permit electronically using the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS).
If you have lost your temporary residence permit, your first step is to submit a notification of the loss of your temporary residence permit using MIGRIS at any time of the day. Your temporary residence permit will be immediately invalidated and you will be able to apply for a new temporary residence permit using MIGRIS.
Please attach a digital copy of your valid travel document (passport) to your application.
If your personal data has changed and it is not available in the Population Register of the Republic of Lithuania, you must attach documents confirming the change in your personal data, e.g. you have married a foreigner abroad and your surname has changed as a result.
After completing the application for a new temporary residence permit using MIGRIS, you have to visit the Migration Department in person at a reserved time within 4 months from the date of completing the application using MIGRIS, or, if you are currently abroad, - the external service provider, and submit the original documents and biometric data attached to the application for a new temporary residence permit.
What is the state fee for a new temporary residence permit?
You must pay a state fee for a new temporary residence permit:
- general procedure – 45 EUR;
- urgent procedure – 90 Eur.
How long does it take to get a new temporary residence permit?
The application for a new temporary residence permit shall be examined and the temporary residence permit shall be re-issued:
- general procedure - within 10 business days;
- urgent procedure - within 5 business days.
How do I know for how long a new temporary residence permit will be issued if, due to the validity of the passport, the temporary residence permit was issued for a shorter period than the period of validity of the temporary residence permit indicated in the decision notice?
After the decision to issue/renew your temporary residence permit was taken, a notice of the decision is sent to your personal MIGRIS account, indicating the validity period of the temporary residence permit. If the notice specifies a specific expiry date for the temporary residence permit, e.g. 31 December 2025, a new permit will be issued by that date if you provide a new valid travel document (passport). If the validity period of the temporary residence permit is specified in the notice in years, e.g. 2 years, the 2-year period of validity of the temporary residence permit is calculated from the date of issue of the existing temporary residence permit, and a new one will be issued for the remaining period.
For how long is the new temporary residence permit issued?
A new temporary residence permit is issued for the period remaining until the expiry of the previously issued temporary residence permit.
If, due to the validity of the travel document (passport), the temporary residence permit was issued for a shorter period than the period of validity of the temporary residence permit indicated in the decision notice, a new temporary residence permit shall be issued for the remaining period of validity of the temporary residence permit indicated in the decision notice on the issue/renewal of the temporary residence permit.
Is it possible to apply for a temporary residence permit immediately after getting a new passport instead of applying for a new temporary residence permit, when due to the validity of the passport the temporary residence permit was issued for a shorter period than the period of validity of the temporary residence permit indicated in the decision notice?
You can choose whether to apply first for the issue/renewal of a temporary residence permit or for a new temporary residence permit.
Is it possible to apply for a new temporary residence permit if my temporary residence permit has been cancelled and declared invalid, but the decision to cancel the temporary residence permit has been appealed in court?
You can if you applied to the Regional Administrative Court for interim measures to suspend the execution of the appealed decision following an appeal against the decision to cancel your temporary residence permit, and your application was successful. The Regional Administrative Court shall issue a decision on the application for measures to enforce the requirement no later than within 2 days from the date of receipt of the application for such measures, or, if the application is submitted together with an appeal against a decision to cancel a temporary residence permit, - from the date of receipt of the appeal.
