I intend to work as a researcher under an employment contract
I want to do research under an employment contract in a science and study institution registered in Lithuania. What should I do?
If you have a valid temporary residence permit or a national visa issued by another Member State of the European Union for the purpose of carrying out research and experimental development work, you may enter and stay in the Republic of Lithuania without a visa for up to 180 days within a 360-day period to carry out part of your research and experimental development work in a science and study institution.

How do I get or renew a temporary residence permit?
You must first submit an application for an issue or renewal of a temporary residence permit electronically through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS). Upon submission of application and after booking the visit time through MIGRIS, you must apply for a temporary residence permit (renewal) in person within 4 months from the date of submission of the application to the MIGRIS and submit the biometric data and the following documents:
3. a document certifying the legal stay,if you apply while residing in Lithuania;
For example, a visa or a residence permit.
Document supporting the grounds for the issue or renewal of a temporary residence permit.
4. Number of mediation letter of the Lithuanian Institute of Science and Studies;
If you arrive under a European Union or multilateral programme that includes mobility measures or an agreement between two or more science and study institutions, the mediation letter must indicate the specific programme or agreement name.
The mediation letter confirms that the science and study institution requesting to accept you as a researcher has evaluated the purpose, duration and qualification of the research and experimental development work as evidenced by a certified copy of the qualification document, and the fact that the institution has sufficient financial resources for research and development or experimental development work.

The employment contract must contain, in addition to the other terms of the employment contract:
name or purpose of research and experimental development work;
your commitment to perform research and experimental development work;
the commitment of the research organisation to accept you for research and development work;
the start and end dates of the research and experimental development work or the expected duration;
information about the intended movement in one or more Member States of the European Union if your movement is known.
6. the consent of the parents or one of them, the guardian (custodian) or another legal representative for the intended stay in the Republic of Lithuania if you are a minor;
7. Document about sufficient means of subsistence;
The amount of subsistence is 1 minimum monthly salary per month. This may be an employment contract.
8. Document about the place of residence;
A document confirming that have an accommodation in which you intend to declare your place of residence and where the living space per each adult who has declared the place of residence there is not less than 7 square meters, you own or use such a room on a rent or lease basis, if the relevant contract is concluded for a period not shorter than the period of validity of the temporary residence permit and the contract is registered with the State Enterprise Centre of Registers (Real Estate Register), or the commitment of the legal entity to provide you with a suitable accommodation where you will declare your place of residence and which will meet the requirements for accommodation, during the period of the temporary residence permit, verified by the signature and seal of the notary of the Republic of Lithuania, the elder of the Municipality of the Republic of Lithuania or a manager of the natural or legal entity certified by the civil servant authorised by the Migration division or Migration Department, if such legal entity must bear a stamp.
9. police clearance certificate;
Required only for the application for the first temporary residence permit. These are certificates issued by the competent authorities of the foreign countries in which you lived or are currently resident for the last 2 years prior to your arrival to Lithuania (except where you have lived abroad for less than 6 monthswithin a 12-month period) confirming the absence (if any) of your convictions in these states which must be issued not earlier than 6 months before the date of your application for a residence permit, translated into Lithuanian, as well as legalized and/or certified (Apostille) when necessary. If you have convictions, the certificate must state when and for what kind of criminal offense you were sentenced, what kind of punishment has been imposed, and whether it has been served.
A clearance certificate stating that you have no convictions, may be made in the original English language or may be accompanied by a translation of this document to English, verified by the translator’s signature.
10. Health insurance document (sum insured – EUR 6,000).
Health insurance must meet the following requirements:
the insurance must guarantee the reimbursement of the necessary medical expenses, as defined in the Law on Health of the Republic of Lithuania, and expenses that may arise due to the return of the foreigner to the foreign state for health reasons (transportation, including escort of a personal health care professional (specialists)); and
the insurance must be valid for the entire period of validity of the requested temporary residence permit or for at least one year.
Health insurance is not required if you are paying (will pay) social insurance contributions of the specified amount, or somebody will pay them for you.
Decisions on temporary residence permits are made and temporary residence permits are issued through:
for the issue of permit:
in accordance with the general procedure – within 3 months;
urgently – within 45 calendar days;
for changing the permit:
in accordance with the general procedure – within 2 months;
urgently – within 1 month.

Can I bring family members?
You can. Family members are: your spouse, registered partner, unmarried and dependent underage children, your dependent parents if you have been supporting them for at least 1 year and they are unable to use the assistance of other family members living abroad.
They can apply for temporary residence permits at the same time as you. They will be issued temporary residence permits for the same period as your temporary residence permit.
When do I have to apply for the renewal of a temporary residence permit?
An application for the renewal of a temporary residence permit in general procedure with the accompanying documents must be submitted at least 2 months in advance and an application for changing a temporary residence permit and supporting documents must be submitted at least 1 month before the expiry of the temporary residence permit, but not earlier than 4 months in advance.
For how long will I get a temporary residence permit?
A temporary residence permit will be issued to you for a period of 2 years or, if your duration of work as a researcher is less than 2 years, for 3 months longer than the duration of this work.
