I want to report of the acquired citizenship of another state
If you are a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania and you have acquired the citizenship of another state, you must inform the institution authorised by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania or a diplomatic mission or consular post of the Republic of Lithuania.
Loss of citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania upon acquisition of citizenship of another state
The loss of citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania upon acquisition of citizenship of another state is one of the ways of loss of citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania.
A citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who has acquired the citizenship of another state loses the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania from the date of acquisition of the citizenship of another state, except for persons who may be citizens of the Republic of Lithuania and another state simultaneously (Republic of Lithuania Law on Citizenship Article 26 (1)).
Individuals who may be citizens of the Republic of Lithuania and other countries simultaneously:
- He has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and the citizenship of another state at birth;
- He is a person who was deported from the bite Republic of Lithuania before 11 March 1990;
- He is a person who departed from Lithuania before 11 March 1990;
- He is a descendant of a person referred to in subparagraph 2 or 3 of this Article;
- He married a citizen of another state and therefore has acquired the citizenship of another state by default (ipso facto);
- A person who has been adopted by a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania until the age of 18 and therefore has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania pursuant to Article 17 (1) of the Republic of Lithuania Law on Citizenship;
- A person is a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania if he or she was adopted by the citizen (citizens) of another state before he reached the age of eighteen and therefore he has acquired the citizenship of another state;
- he has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania by exception being the citizen of another state;
- He is a person who has preserved the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania or to whom the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania was reinstated for special merits to the Republic of Lithuania;
- he has acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania while having refugee status in the Republic of Lithuania.
- he has acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania at birth and has acquired citizenship of another country till he was 18 years old.
Notification of acquired citizenship of another state
A citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who has acquired citizenship of another state must, within two months from the date of the acquisition of citizenship of another state, notify in writing an institution authorised by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, or a diplomatic mission or consular post of the Republic of Lithuania thereof.
A citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who has acquired the citizenship of another state may be a citizen of another state at the same time if:
- He has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and the citizenship of another state by birth ;
- He is a person who was deported from the bite Republic of Lithuania before 11 March 1990.
Person exiled from the occupied Republic of Lithuania before 11 March 1990 – a person who held citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania before 15 June 1940 or his/her descendant, who was/were forcibly expelled from Lithuania by decisions of institutions or courts of occupation regimes in the period from 15 June 1940 to 11 March 1990 for reasons of resistance to occupation regimes, political or social reasons or reasons of origin. - He is a person who departed from Lithuania before 11 March 1990.
A person who fled Lithuania before 11 March 1990, – a person who held citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania before 15 June 1940 or his descendant, who left the current territory of the Republic of Lithuania before 11 March 1990 to reside permanently in another state, if their permanent residence on 11 March 1990 was outside Lithuania. This term does not include the persons who departed from the territory of the Republic of Lithuania to the territory of the former Soviet Union after 15 June 1940. - He/she is a descendant of a person specified in Article 7 (2) or (3) of the Republic of Lithuania Law on Citizenship
Descendant of a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania means a child, grandchild or great-grandchild of a person who held citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania before 15 June 1940. - He married a citizen of another state and therefore has acquired the citizenship of another state by default (ipso facto);
- A person is a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania if he or she was adopted by the citizen (citizens) of another state before he reached the age of eighteen and therefore he has acquired the citizenship of another state;
- He is a person who has preserved the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania or to whom the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania was reinstated for special merits to the Republic of Lithuania.
- He is a person who has preserved the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania or to whom the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania was reinstated for special merits to the Republic of Lithuania;
- He has acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania at birth and has acquired citizenship of another country till he was 18 years old.
You must submit a notification of acquisition of citizenship of another state electronically through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS) and attach the following documents:
- Identity document;
- Document certifying the date of acquisition of the citizenship of other state (naturalisation certificate, certificate of citizenship, other document issued by a foreign competent authority indicating the date of acquisition of the citizenship).
No state levy is payable.
Application procedure:
You must submit a notification of acquisition of citizenship of another state electronically through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS). Upon submitting the application, You will have to book a visit to the Migration Department, diplomatic missions or consular posts of the Republic of Lithuania. Upon arrival at the territorial division of the Migration Department, diplomatic missions or consular posts of the Republic of Lithuania, You must submit the originals of the documents, digital copies of which You have attached when completing the notification of acquisition of citizenship of another state .
Important:
- after completing the notification of acquisition of citizenship of another state, within 4 months from the date of filling in this application through MIGRIS, You must appear in person at the Migration Department or consular post to submit the originals of the documents, digital copies of which You have attached when completing the notification of acquisition of citizenship of another state, or notarised or equivalent copies of the original documents;
- if the original documents or notarised or equivalent copies of the original documents are provided to the Migration Department or consular post by Your representative, then he/she must enclose a valid identity document and a representation document. If the said documents are submitted to the Migration Department by an authorised representative, then he/she must additionally attach a representation agreement or a certified copy of this agreement (when the original documents are provided by representatives) or a notarised power of attorney (when original documents are provided by other authorised representatives);
- the documents attached to the notification of acquisition of citizenship of another state, except for the travel documents included in the list of travel documents approved by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania entitling an alien to enter the Republic of Lithuania, must be dranw up in Lithuanian, or You must submit a translation of these documents into Lithuanian, which must be certified by a person or institution entitled to certify translation from one language to another;
- when completing the application for the notification of acquisition of citizenship of another state, You must attach the originals of the documents or the notarised or equivalent copies of the original documents. Each separate document issued by a foreign state and each separate document certified by a notary or equivalent procedure of a foreign state must be legalized or endorsed with an Apostille, unless otherwise provided by international treaties of the Republic of Lithuania or legal acts of the European Union. This provision shall not apply to travel documents, nor in cases where it is not possible to legalize or endorse the documents with an Apostille in a foreign country or part thereof affected by a humanitarian crisis.
The notification must be examined no later than within 3 months from the day of receipt of the notification at the Migration Department.
A citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who has acquired the citizenship of another state may be a citizen of another state at the same time if:
- He has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and the citizenship of another state by birth;

- He has acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania at birth and has acquired citizenship of another country till he was 18 years old.
You must submit a notification of acquisition of citizenship of another state electronically through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS) and attach the following documents:
- Identity document;

Do I have to report when I acquire the citizenship of another state?
A citizen of the Republic of Lithuania must notify in writing of acquisition of citizenship of another state within 2 months of the date of acquisition of the citizenship of another state.
What do I have to indicate in my report on the acquired citizenship of another state?
In your notice on the acquisition of the citizenship of another state you must state when and what citizenship you have acquired and whether you meet the conditions when a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania may be a citizen of another state at the same time.
Do I have the right to be a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania and another state at the same time?
Yes, if:
- You have acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and another state by birth;
- You are a person who was deported from the bite Republic of Lithuania before 11 March 1990;
- You are a person who departed from Lithuania before 11 March 1990;
- You are a descendant of the person referred to in points 2 and 3;
- You have married a citizen of another state and therefore have acquired the citizenship of another state by default (ipso facto);
- You are a person who has not reached the age of 21 if you have been adopted by the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania before you have reached the age of 18 and therefore you have acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania;
- You are a person under 21 years of age, provided you, a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania, were adopted by citizens of another state before you have reached 18 years of age and, as a result, you have acquired citizenship of that state;
- As a citizen of another state, you acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania by way of exception;
- You are a person who has preserved the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania or the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania was reinstated to you for special merits to the Republic of Lithuania;
- You have acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania while having refugee status in the Republic of Lithuania.
- You have acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania at birth and have acquired citizenship of another country till you were 18 years old.

What documents do I have to submit?
You must provide an identity document and a document certifying the date of acquisition of the citizenship of another state. If you meet the conditions for a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania to be a citizen of another state, you must submit the supporting documents (drop-down).
Documents proving that you have acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and another state at birth; that you are a person exiled from the occupied Republic of Lithuania before 11 March 1990 or left Lithuania before 11 March 1990, or you are a descendant of a person exiled from the occupied Republic of Lithuania before 11 March 1990 or departed from Lithuania before 11 March 1990; or that, by marrying a citizen of another state you therefore have acquired the citizenship of another state by default (ipso facto); or that you are a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania until you have reached the age of 18, adopted by citizen (citizens) of another state and therefore you have acquired the citizenship of another state; or that you are the person who you have preserved the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania or the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania was reinstated to you for special merits to the Republic of Lithuania.
What documents confirm the date of acquisition of the citizenship of another state?
The date of acquisition of citizenship of another state is confirmed by the documents issued by foreign state institutions, indicating the date of acquisition of citizenship of another state (naturalisation certificates, certificates of citizenship, etc.). The passport of a foreign state does not confirm the date of acquisition of citizenship of another state.
What are the sanctions for not notifying for the acquired citizenship of another state?
Failure to notify in writing about the acquired citizenship of another state will result in a fine from 300 to 850 EUR.
Will my children lose the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania if I lose it?
If a child has acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania at birth, then he will remain a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania if one or both parents of the child lose the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania.
If a child has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania not at birth, and both parents who have acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania by naturalisation, lose the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, he or she loses the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, except if he or she would remain a stateless person. A child from 14 to 18 years of age may lose his/her citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania only with his/her consent.
If the child has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania not at birth, and one of his/her parents who gas acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania by naturalisation, loses the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and the other parent remains a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania, the child remains a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania.
If a child has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania not by virtue of birth and one of his/her parents who gas acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania by naturalisation, loses the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and the other parent is not a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania or is unknown, the child loses the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania unless he/she remains a stateless person. A child from 14 to 18 years of age may lose his/her citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania only with his/her consent.
