I can't leave unexpectedly but my visa is about to expire. What to do?
You can apply for a national visa if the maximum time of stay with a Schengen visa or visa-free stay has been used (90 days in any 180 day period) and one from for the following reasons exists:
• illness, other acute illness or body condition;
• a personal reason you could not foresee;
• force majeure.
A letter of mediation completed by the host person or legal entity through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS) may be submitted. If the letter of mediation is submitted, indicate the number of the letter of mediation in the visa application.
To get a national visa you must electronically via the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS) fill-out the application to issue the national visa and include digital copies of the documents being added to this application. After filling-out the request and booking the visitation time you must personally address in regards to the issuance of national visa and submit the biometric data, as well as original documents. Digital copies of these documents shall be added to the application:
1. Valid travel document (passport) that meets the following requirements:
• must be issued in the last ten years;
• must contain at least two blank pages;
• travel document validity term must be at least 3 months longer than the requested visa validity term.
2. Document about sufficient means of subsistence (e. g., employment contract, bank account statement);
The subsistence amount is 1 minimum monthly salary per month, and for a minor alien – 0.5 minimum monthly salary for one month, the amount for return to the country of origin or a foreign country to which you are entitled to travel, the amount of funds – 1 minimum monthly salary.
Funds or received regular income must be sufficient to live in Lithuania for the entire period of validity of the visa. These documents may be submitted in English or a certified-by-the-interpreter’s-signature translation to English from a different language may be submitted.
If an undertaking by a natural person to support you is submitted (signature of the obligor must be notarized or signed in the presence of an employee of the Migration Department or an external service provider when applying for a visa) - documents must be submitted confirming your family or kinship ties with the person submitting the undertaking, as well as documents proving that the natural person has sufficient funds and/or will legally receive a regular income necessary to maintain you in Lithuania for the entire period of validity of the national visa, and will have the funds to cover the costs associated with your return to your country of origin or to a foreign country to which you have the right to go.
3. Health insurance document, valid during the stay in Lithuania and in all the Schengen countries.
Health insurance must guarantee the reimbursement of the necessary medical expenses, as defined in the Republic of Lithuania Law on Health, and expenses that may arise due to the return of the alien to a foreign state for health reasons (transportation, including escort of a personal health care specialist (specialists)). The sum insured must be at least EUR 30,000.
If the insurance company refuses to provide you with insurance services, you can submit your commitment to pay the costs of health care provided to you during your stay in Lithuania with at least 3 letters from insurance companies confirming that you are refused health insurance services due to your old age or health condition. A person related to you by family or kinship ties can also undertake to support you (signature of the obligor must be notarized or signed in the presence of an employee of the Migration Department or an external service provider when applying for a visa).
You have to pay a fee – EUR 140.
If you are exempt from this fee in the cases provided by law, you must provide documents confirming these circumstances.
For the issue of a national visa, you must apply to the Migration Department if you are legally in Lithuania.
The decision to issue a national visa is made within 15 calendar days from the date of the request. This period may be extended by up to 45 calendar days.
Important:
• the national visa is issued for a maximum of 1 year;
• if you have been issued with a national visa for 1 year or several national visas with a total validity period of 1 year, you may be issued with another national visa if more than 180 days had elapsed from your previous visa or the total validity period of all visas you had. The total period of validity of several national visas must be counted from the date of issue of the previous national visa, if less than 180 days have elapsed since the expiry of its validity.
I come under the terms of an international treaty. What documents do I have to submit for a national visa?
You can get a national visa if you come to Lithuania under the terms of an international treaty of the Republic of Lithuania. In order to promote the movement of young people seeking to learn different traditions and cultures, give the citizens of Contracting States the opportunity to enter another Contracting State for cognitive purposes, on holiday in the territory of that State, together with the right to study or work, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania has signed the following treaties with:
• the Government of Canada on youth exchanges;
• the Government of New Zealand on a programme for working on vacation;
• the Government of Japan on a programme for working on vacation.
The mediation letter may be submitted in cases when, in accordance with the provisions of international treaties, you are going to work according to a preliminary arranged employment contract, internship, practice according to prior agreement or engage in other activities in the legal entity of the Republic of Lithuania. If the letter of mediation is submitted, indicate the number of the letter of mediation in the visa application.

4. To the application for the issuance of a national visa attach documents referred to in an international treaty, or, if not specified, documents confirming the purpose and conditions of entry specified in the international treaty and/or describe the circumstances of your stay in Lithuania:
• You are a Canadian citizen and you intend to arrive under an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the Government of Canada on youth exchanges;
Canadian citizens may enter the Republic of Lithuania if they are:
o young citizens, including graduates of university and non-university higher education institutions or research institutions, willing to improve their qualifications in the host country under a employment contract arranged in advance in order to gain greater career prospects and show that they have a employment contract arranged in advance;
o registered students of university and non-university higher education institutions or research institutions in their country willing to take part in their academic study programme as a pre-agreed traineeship or work practice in the host country, including, under contracts concluded between educational institutions and providing documents to demonstrate prior registration or enrolment at a university, non-university higher education institution or research establishment or demonstrating that they are travelling for an internship or work practice;
o young citizens, including registered students who intend to travel in the host country, where their presence is related to tourism and cultural cognitive activities and occasionally work, to supplement their financial resources, and who confirm their intentions.
Participation in the youth exchanges programme is allowed for up to two times and only if citizens meet the requirements of the two different categories listed. The periods of stay must be interrupted by a break. The duration of each stay may not exceed one year.
Citizens of Canada intending to enter the Republic of Lithuania under the youth exchange programme at the time of application for a national visa must be 18 – 35 years old; have a valid passport and a return ticket or have sufficient financial resources to buy it; to travel to the Republic of Lithuania alone (without dependents); prove that they have sufficient financial resources to meet their needs at the start of the stay; to pay all required fees, charges and taxes; have health insurance for the entire period of stay in Lithuania.
Temporary residence permits and work permits during the legal stay may be issued to Canadian citizens who have the right to use the youth exchange programme and who hold a multiple-entry national visa issued on that basis upon their arrival in the Republic of Lithuania.
• You are a New Zealand citizen and you intend to come under the agreement of the government of the Republic of Lithuania and the Government of New Zealand on the work holiday programme;
Citizens of New Zealand who wish to go on holiday may enter the Republic of Lithuania while having the opportunity to study and acquire work experience, and who:
o on the date of application are 18 to 30 years of age;
o have a valid travel document issued for the last 10 years, with a validity of at least 3 months longer than the period of validity of the visa requested;
o indicate that the main purpose of a trip to the Republic of Lithuania is participation in a holiday programme, i.e. holiday, while work or study is not the main reason for the visit;
o do not come with dependents;
o submit a document confirming that they have sufficient funds and/or receive regular income in the Republic of Lithuania and have funds to return to the country of origin or a foreign state to which they have the right to travel;
o have a health insurance document;
o have paid a fee provided in the legislation of the Republic of Lithuania for a multiple-entry national visa application;
o previously did not participate in this work holiday programme.
New Zealand citizens who have arrived in the Republic of Lithuania under a work holiday programme are not subject to the requirement to obtain a work permit provided for in the laws and other legal acts of the Republic of Lithuania. It should be noted that New Zealand citizens who have arrived in the Republic of Lithuania during their work holiday programme are not allowed to be employed in a permanent job or work for the same employer for more than 6 months during the period of stay in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania.
• you are a Japanese citizen and you intend to arrive in accordance with the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the Government of Japan (applicable from 2019-04-01) on a work holiday programme;
Japanese citizens living in Japan can enter the Republic of Lithuania if they:
o indicate out that the main purpose of a trip to the Republic of Lithuania is holiday;
o on the date of application are 18 to 30 years of age;
o do not come with dependents, except those who hold a multiple-entry national visa or another visa issued by the Republic of Lithuania under the said agreement;
o have a valid travel document issued during the last 10 years, which is valid for at least 3 months longer than the period of validity of the visa requested;
o have a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket;
o submit a document confirming that they have sufficient funds and/or receive regular income in the Republic of Lithuania during the period of validity of the multiple-entry national visa;
o state that they intend to leave the Republic of Lithuania after the expiry of the multiple-entry national visa;
o did not previously participate in work holiday programme;
o have a health insurance document.
Japanese citizens who have arrived in the Republic of Lithuania under a holiday work programme are not subject to the requirement to obtain a work permit laid down in the laws and other legal acts of the Republic of Lithuania, they may be employed and enrolled in training courses or study for a period of up to 6 months in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, but are not allowed to be employed on a permanent basis or work for the same employer for more than 6 months during the period of stay in the Republic of Lithuania.
You have to pay a fee – EUR 140.
If you are exempt from this fee in the cases provided by law, you must provide documents confirming these circumstances.
For the issue of a national visa, you must apply to:
• an external service provider if you are abroad;
• the Migration Department if you are legally in Lithuania.
The decision to issue a national visa is made within 15 calendar days from the date of the request. This period may be extended by up to 45 calendar days.
Important:
• the national visa is issued for a maximum of 1 year;
• if you have been issued with a national visa for 1 year or several national visas with a total validity period of 1 year, you may be issued with another national visa if more than 180 days had elapsed from your previous visa or the total validity period of all visas you had. The total period of validity of several national visas must be counted from the date of issue of the previous national visa, if less than 180 days have elapsed since the expiry of its validity;
• if you are holding a national visa, valid for 1 year or several national visas with a total validity of 1 year, and intending to apply for a temporary residence permit, in order to stay in Lithuania during the consideration of the application will have to submit this application in advance – 1,5 to 3 months before the expiry of the actual national visa.
The purpose of my arrival is a long-term stay in Lithuania. What documents do I have to submit for a national visa?
You can apply for a national visa if you come to the Republic of Lithuania for the following purposes:
• treatment or medical rehabilitation;
• for the purposes of professional development of high added value occupation (e. g., aviation, shipping areas);
• maintenance and repair work, where the presence of the representatives of a foreign company is a prerequisite for carrying out the above-mentioned works (e. g., aviation, shipping areas);
• you are a participant of volunteer programmes;
• you are a pupil coming to the Republic of Lithuania to study at a general education school according to international student exchange programmes;
• at the invitation of the state institution and this institution submitted a mediation letter through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS);
• in other cases, when the purpose of your arrival or staying in Lithuania is a long-term stay and you submit documents confirming your long-term stay in the Republic of Lithuania or documents confirming the objective circumstances that make it necessary for you to stay in Lithuania.
If you come to Lithuania to improve your professional qualification with a high added value or to perform technical maintenance and repair work or as a participant in volunteer programs or as a pupil under an international pupil exchange program or at the invitation of a Lithuanian state institution, the company, institution or organization inviting you, first of all, through the Lithuanian Migration information system (MIGRIS) must submit a letter of mediation (in the visa application you will have to indicate the number of the letter of mediation).

If you are in Lithuania for other long-term stay or for objective reasons you have to stay in the Republic of Lithuania and you submit documents confirming these circumstances, you should apply to the Migration Department for the issuance of a national visa (your stay in Lithuania must be legal).
In other cases (you are coming for treatment, medical rehabilitation, to improve a professional qualification of high added value, for the performance of technical maintenance and repair work, as a pupil or as a volunteer or at the invitation of a Lithuanian state institution), you must apply for the issuance of a national visa to:
• an external service provider if you are abroad;
• the Migration Department if you are legally in Lithuania.
The decision to issue a national visa is made within 15 calendar days from the date of the request. This period may be extended by up to 45 calendar days.

I have lost my residence permit or a residence permit of a family member of a Union citizen abroad
If you lost your permanent residence permit card or the residence permit card of a family member of a Union citizen while abroad, you can get a national visa so that you can submit a request to renew the lost document upon your return to Lithuania.
First of all, you have to report the lost document through your MIGRIS account.
