The number of foreigners living in Lithuania exceeded 200 thousand for the first time in the country’s history. Statistics available from the Migration Department show that on 1 September, a total of 203,157 persons from various foreign countries lived in Lithuania.

The Department of Migration, in order to improve the quality of the provided electronic services and the operation of the Lithuanian migration information system MIGRIS, implemented improvements in it.

By the order of the Minister of the Interior, Agnė Bilotaitė, the new Description of the National Visa Issuance Procedure, which entered into force on 01 July, was approved. According to this piece of legislation, some grounds on which foreigners used to apply for a national visa have been amended.

From 1 July, the service for foreigners at the Migration Department’s branch in Elektrėnai will be terminated. Such a decision was made in order to optimize the institution’s human resources, more efficiently distribute the workload falling on employees and after conducting an analysis of customer flows.

After the changes in the Law on the Legal Status of Foreigners come into effect on 1 July, foreigners who are not in Lithuania will apply for national visas only through the external service provider chosen by the Migration Department. From 5 April, the Migration Department, in cooperation with the Identity Documents Personalisation Centre under the Ministry of the Interior, is introducing additional document collection services for foreigners.
